Meeting Matthew

Meeting Matthew is our relaxed, informal Bible study group where we gather in a warm, welcoming home to read, explore, and discuss the Gospel of Matthew together.

Whether you’ve never opened a Bible before or have been studying Scripture for decades, everyone is warmly invited. We take our time, encourage questions, share insights, and support one another as we discover more about Jesus through Matthew’s account. No pressure, no prior knowledge needed — just a desire to learn and grow in faith alongside others. We meet regularly during term time; new faces are always a joy to welcome. Currently meeting on Wednesday evenings. Details are in the most recent Service Booklet.

Book Group

Our Book Club is a warm, welcoming gathering that meets on the first Monday of each month. Over tea and biscuits, we come together in a friendly, relaxed atmosphere to explore books and ideas that often carry a spiritual thread.

Our reading choices are varied, embracing fiction, memoirs, poetry, and more. Recent selections have included The Covenant of Water by Abraham Verghese, with its moving exploration of family, faith, healing, and the enduring presence of grace amid hardship; I, Julian by Claire Gilbert, a fictional autobiography that brings to life the medieval mystic Julian of Norwich and her revelations of divine love in a time of plague and uncertainty; and moments of gentle inspiration, such as sharing favourite quotes from The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse by Charlie Mackesy.

Some months, we step away from books altogether to discuss a piece of art such as Michelangelo's breathtaking ceiling in the Sistine Chapel. In January, we each chose a favourite piece of music, favourite film, and favourite book to talk about with each other.

Everyone is welcome, whether you're a keen reader, an occasional browser, or simply someone seeking thoughtful company. No prior knowledge is needed other than and a willingness to share or simply listen over a cup of tea.

If you're interested in joining us, please get in touch as we'd love to hear from you!

Church Choir

The church has a small but very competent robed choir singing in soprano, alto, tenor and bass four-part harmony. They sing at the Sunday morning Eucharist each week and Choral Evensong on the fifth Sunday in the relevant months.

We have additional singers who join us for rehearsals and services when available, particularly at the Christmas and Easter seasons. At these times we can number up to sixteen singers, though routinely we have from six to ten.

We rehearse in church on the 2nd and 4th Thursdays in the month at 7.15 and additionally on Sunday mornings before the Eucharist to run through hymns and the communion settings for that day. We also rehearse at 4.30 prior to Evensongs on the relevant Sundays. We are a very happy bunch and blessed with a considerable sense of humour!!

The organist is always willing to meet prospective singers who might like to join the choir and find out more about the work we do.

The first Sunday in each month is a more informal service with contemporary hymns and songs in which the children play a large part in the singing and worship. Again we are very keen to encourage more young people to join us, particularly at these services!
